Tait Communications: New Zealand’s Private-Network Path

In 1969, Sir Angus Tait founded the company in New Zealand. The small domestic market nonetheless nurtured an organizational culture emphasizing RF engineering, reliability, and customer-site iteration. Early products were mobile radios and base-station solutions for local utilities and commercial customers. The company soon pursued export opportunities in the UK, US, and Australia, giving Tait an “internationally biddable professional equipment maker” identity from the start.

Multi-Standard Approach

As the industry moved from analog trunking to digital, Tait built capabilities across P25 and DMR, establishing a presence in North American critical communications and global commercial-industrial projects. Compared to vendors locked into a single standard, Tait more often configures its product mix to match the customer’s regional standard and procurement preferences. The brand is seen in the industry as an “engineering-driven supplier” — emphasizing long-term maintenance, project-based delivery, and field support, with lower consumer visibility but strong reputation in government, public-safety, and utility procurement circles.

Current Position

Tait represents the path of a private-network vendor from a smaller nation: using engineering capability and export orientation to navigate analog, digital, and multi-standard eras, sustained by key customers and long-cycle contracts rather than consumer-electronics volume. Under broadband and converged-dispatch trends, Tait is also exploring software, LTE backhaul terminals, and network management solutions.
